I recently visited the Katariinanlaakso nature trail in Turku, Finland. Named after Duchess Katariina of Jagiellonica, who frequented the area for picnics, this trail is nestled in South-West Finland, offering a serene escape into nature. Despite being just a couple of kilometers long, the trail boasts beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife.
I frequent this place, both with and without my camera. As you walk along the path, you’ll be surrounded by lush forests and ocean views. The trail provides ample opportunities to capture the essence of Finnish fauna up close, making it a peaceful retreat despite its proximity to the city.
The blue tits in the area are so tame that they dare to come and eat from your hand.
Due to its popularity among locals, the animals in the area are accustomed to human presence. There are spots where animals are fed, making it an ideal location to practice wildlife photography. I’m almost 100% sure you will see charming birds and playful squirrels. I personally used a 55-120mm lens and have had great success. In addition to birds and squirrels, you may also encounter waterbirds like the Great Crested Grebe or Mallards. Keep an eye out for shyer creatures like badgers, foxes, other birds, or deer, although they are less commonly spotted. Just keep in mind that for close-up shots of these animals, a longer zoom is necessary.
The place was perfect for practicing shooting, but if you want to capture more natural photos of animals, make sure they aren’t standing in front of a pile of food. The same applies when shooting birds.
