Program Mode: Your Camera’s Easy Street
You’ve outgrown Auto Mode but not ready to go full-on manual? Enter Program Mode.
It’s not too hands-off like Auto Mode, but it doesn’t dive into the manual maze either. You may hear Program mode referred to as an ISO-priority mode. This mode isn’t as popular as aperture or shutter priority mode, but if you know how to use it, it becomes a powerful tool.
Why Bother with Program Mode?
In this mode, your camera sets the initial scene, and you get to decide the metering, white balance, focus modes, and exposure compensation.
In my opinion, this mode works best when you want to adjust ISO (how sensitive your camera is to light), and you trust your camera can handle the other settings. Low ISO numbers reduce noise in your photos, but in dark times, you need a higher number. Experiment with it to change the mood of your photos – low ISO for crisp landscapes, higher ISO for dynamic, low-light shots.
This mode also works really well when you’re shooting a photo of snow, and it’s too dark. You can easily fix it by dialing in positive exposure compensation to brighten up the shot (e.g., +2/3).
